AKABA ANNOUNCES FREE CODE RED II ASSESSMENTS
Corporate Users can Reduce Risk and Gain Peace of Mind
Campbell, Calif., August 7, 2001 - Akaba, Inc., leading provider
of Automated Security Scanning Services, today announced a
complimentary one-time scan for the Code Red II worm in corporate
networks. This valuable service will alert IT managers to
problems or give them peace of mind from the Code Red II threat.
"We are very proud to offer this free service to the
Internet community," says Bill Hunt, CEO for Akaba, Inc.
"The threat of Code Red II is grave and immediate. This
complimentary scan can give IT Managers the information they
need to avert disaster." The network scan will notify
users if they are vulnerable to the Code Red II worm, or if
they have already been infected.
Like its predecessor, the Code Red II worm exploits a vulnerability
in Microsoft's IIS web server software. "Code Red II
is not simply a variant of the original worm" says Tim
Huntley, Chief Technology Officer for Akaba, Inc., "but
a completely new program with a much more sinister purpose".
Unlike the original worm, which was a nuisance to hundreds
of thousands of system administrators, the new worm plants
a "back door" or "trojan horse" program.
Infected machines seemingly return to normal operation in
a few days but can be remotely controlled, exposing passwords
and allowing sensitive files to be downloaded, edited or erased.
Akaba's flagship product, PointScan is a scanning service
that audits customers networks on an ongoing basis. Thousands
of vulnerabilities are checked for, and results are reported
in an easy-to-read format. Several reports are generated for
various users in the organization, from the CIO to the IT
manager, to the IT professional.
